Mold and HVAC Moisture Problems Delay Opening of Texas Elementary School

Westwood Elementary School in Friendswood, Texas delayed the start of its school year after environmental testing identified elevated mold levels, including Penicillium and Cladosporium in the air and on surfaces throughout the campus. Investigators connected the problem to high summer humidity and an HVAC system that was not adequately controlling moisture. The response has included removal of affected materials, deep cleaning, HVAC replacement and additional environmental testing. It is a strong example of the relationship between HVAC performance, humidity control, indoor air quality and mold growth, and why moisture management is an essential part of protecting occupied buildings.
