Credit to WILX News 10 reporters Danny Valle and Alek Harasim for continuing to follow the developing ricin incident in Hastings, Michigan. Their September 12 report confirms that laboratory testing detected ricin associated with Tyden Lofts and the Corewell Health Pennock Hospital Emergency Department. Access to Tyden Lofts remains restricted while environmental sampling, risk assessment, and potential remediation continue, and officials have said residents cannot return until the building is formally cleared as safe. Their reporting raises an important question that begins where the immediate emergency response eventually ends: What does it actually take to decontaminate a building affected by ricin and establish that it is safe to occupy again? Ricin presents a very different environmental challenge from the biological contaminants most people are familiar with. Stay tuned Wednesday, when Ask AuntieGen takes a deeper look at ricin contamination, decontamination, and the questions that must be answered before an affected building can safely return to use.
