The British Columbia Real Estate Association is renewing its call for a province-wide policy governing the remediation of homes affected by illicit drug production. The issue returned to the forefront following the discovery of clandestine drug operations at rural properties in Chilliwack and Abbotsford. BCREA says British Columbia’s current municipality-by-municipality approach creates significant inconsistencies in how these properties are identified, repaired, remediated and ultimately returned to safe occupancy. BCREA’s concern is supported by research it conducted with the University of the Fraser Valley Centre for Public Safety and Criminal Justice Research. That work found differences among municipal requirements and called for a standardized provincial process. The research has also raised the importance of improved, accessible property records so buyers and lenders can make informed decisions about homes previously affected by drug production. This is an important conversation for homeowners, buyers, real-estate professionals and the remediation industry, and it raises questions that extend beyond British Columbia. AuntieGen will take a closer look at some of those questions in a follow-up article on Wednesday.
